GM Renaissance Center
Detroit, MI
The General Motors Corporation engaged Hines to lead the redevelopment and facility management activities for the 5.5 million-square-foot GM Renaissance Center. Originally completed in 1977, GM purchased the complex in 1996 for use as its global headquarters. The facility features a 74-story, 1,300-room Marriott Hotel, surrounded by four 39-story office towers totaling a combined 2.3 million square feet. Each of the five towers rests atop a five-story podium structure containing 165,000 square feet of retail space. The redevlopment included the full renovation of the hotel and office towers, the construction of a five-story, glass-enclosed winter garden along the riverfront, a 12-foot-wide suspended glass circulation walkway linking the office towers, a 40,000-square-foot exhibit space and the creation of the 30,000-square-foot General Motors University.
