In 1995, Hines, in a joint venture with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and the Clark Construction Group, was selected by the State of California to build its new $265 million office building known as the San Francisco Civic Center Complex. The 1,030,000-square-foot project comprises a full city block in San Francisco's Civic Center, a national historic landmark district. The scope of the project included the renovation and seismic retrofit of the six-story, 200,000-square-foot historic California State Supreme Court Building, and construction of a new 14-story, 830,000-square-foot adjoining office tower. The office tower features one-story twin atriums and large, 50,000-square-foot floor plates.
