(SAN FRANCISCO) – Hines, the global real estate investment, development, and property manager, announced the completion of the renovation of 101 California, the 48-story tower, 1.2 million-square-foot office tower, in San Francisco’s Financial District. The improvements include a re-envisioned outdoor plaza, lobbies, and new tenant amenities that create a more engaging, human-scale experience at the renowned downtown San Francisco tower.
The iconic building’s lobby spaces have been transformed into a welcoming, hospitality-inspired experience including concierge stations, new seating areas, and “The Clubhouse,” a significant new addition that features a cafe and lounge situated in the southeast corner of the ground floor. Above the cafe, a tenant-only space allows for casual work, small team meetings, or festive gatherings, while offering views from a cantilevered skybox projecting into the seven-story main lobby atrium. Additionally, there is a new fitness center for tenant use that is equipped with a full suite of cardio and strength training equipment. The transformation of lobby spaces and integration of new amenities, led by architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, include modernized finishes with Platinum Pearl granite flooring and stainless-steel cladding that amplifies the natural light brought in through the iconic sloped glass atrium.
“The reimagining of 101 California’s plaza and lobbies through visionary design and introduction of new onsite amenities creates a workplace experience that draws our tenants’ employees to the office,” said George Clever, senior managing director and city head of the San Francisco office of Hines. “Our mission with the plaza redesign was to reenergize this iconic community space for tenants and visitors alike and create a more open and human-scale experience where people can gather and connect.”
In collaboration with landscape architecture firm OJB, the plaza redesign has created a greener and more open presence along the adjacent streets, while providing new opportunities for gathering throughout. The plaza features a retail pavilion and a new restaurant exterior along the annex promenade, including a canopy with built-in heaters, a glass-enclosed dining room, and permanent planters along the patio. With more generous street frontage and an assemblage of native planting, the boundary between the building and landscape is softened, providing variety and texture throughout all seasons. The new interior lobbies and the outdoor plaza provide a flexible canvas for a wide variety of events.
“It has been a great privilege to work with Hines on this iconic tower to create a more welcoming and engaging presence for the 101 California tenants and visitors to enjoy,” said Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Principal Gregory Mottola, FAIA. “The transformation of this property to establish a more human-scale environment, from an activated arrival experience to thoughtful material detailing, brings renewed vibrancy to a renowned downtown San Francisco location.”
