(MILAN, ITALY) – Hines, the international real estate firm, announced today that the 30-story Garibaldi Tower in Porta Nuova officially became the tallest building in Italy, rising to 754 feet high with the addition this past weekend of a 256-foot-tall spire.
On Saturday, a helicopter placed the final pieces of the spire, along with an Italian flag, atop the now complete Cesar Pelli-designed building.
The spiral-shaped spire is constructed of stainless steel and glass.
Weighing 500 tons, the 30-square-foot base of the spire features curved surfaces of varying diameters and dimensions engineered to handle all weather conditions.
The tower can now be seen from more than six miles away.
It is four times taller than the leaning Tower of Pisa and two times taller than the Cathedral of Milan.
Manfredi Catella, CEO of Hines Italia, said, "Completing the tower with a sculptural spire designed by Cesar Pelli symbolizes the importance of the entrepreneurial commitment and the collaboration of investors, banks and our team.
This tower is dedicated to Italy and its ability to create extraordinary outcomes, even in bleaker times.”
The Porta Nuova Garibaldi Tower is 100 percent leased to Unicredit.
It is pre-certified LEED® Gold and is one of the most sustainable buildings in the country.
