Taking Advantage of Emerging Opportunities

After graduating from Texas A&M University, a former Hines intern joins the firm full time.

I had a mentor who not only educated me on our fund, but personally delegated tasks to me and offered regular feedback on my work, all of which helped to shape my career focus.

Margaret, a Houston native and lover of the great outdoors, began her internship with Hines’ Office of Investments in the summer of 2016. She joined a team of five that oversaw the Emerging Market Fund in Brazil.

“At the time, there were five active funds with assets in Brazil. This structure allowed each member of the team to meaningfully contribute to the management of these funds, including me as an intern,” Margaret explains.

While interning, Margaret created a budget revision memo that was presented before the Hines Investment Committee. She also coordinated with accountants and regional teams in Brazil to produce a quarterly report, developed a Capstone presentation that bench-marked Hines Brazil funds against funds with similar investment criteria, and prepared high-level portfolio analysis for institutional investors.

“I had a mentor who not only educated me on our fund, but personally delegated tasks to me and offered regular feedback on my work, all of which helped to shape my career focus.”

Margaret also attended weekly Lunch & Learns where Hines executives led active discussions on topics ranging from conceptual construction to global investment strategies.

One might suppose a career with Hines was in Margaret’s DNA. Her grandfather, a former Shell Oil executive, was one of the first tenants to occupy One Shell Plaza when it was completed by Hines in 1971. Her mother worked as an associate at Neiman Marcus in the Houston Galleria, also developed by Hines.

Margaret received a B.S. in Finance from Texas A&M University in May 2017 and is currently a full-time analyst with Hines’ REIT Retail group. A devoted altruist, she volunteers once a week to raise awareness about human trafficking. Margaret also enjoys hiking, shopping and navigating Houston’s palate-pleasing restaurant scene.
